Waratahs sign Matt Lucas

The Waratahs have announced today that they have signed promising young halfback Matt Lucas.

Matt Lucas in the U20s side

Lucas, the younger brother of Reds utility Ben, has been a involved with the Australian under 20s side for two years and was called into the Sevens side in March as an injury cover.

With 4 halfbacks now in the 35 man roster what does that mean for the Waratahs?

It was very much displayed this year that they missed the Tahs favourite son, Luke Burgess.

South African import Sarel Pretorius has shown some spark with the club but nothing to continue keeping him in the starting XV throughout the year.

His place was taken by Brendan McKibbin, who although had some flair and the ability to goal kick if required. He hasn’t, like Pretorius shown anything to keep him in the starting XV which resulted in the debut of Kiwi born Grayson Hart last Saturday against the Brumbies.

Pretorius is due to return to South Africa at the end of the season to play in the Currie Cup.

What does this mean? With Lucas’ signing, will Pretorius return to Australia after his stint in South Africa?

Is it best to continue finding a talent that has some flair like what Luke Burgess had?

After 7 losses in a row, and non exciting rugby played by the club, it is time that the team now looks elsewhere, and I hope signing Lucas doesn’t become a desperate measure.
