Favourite Team (s): Reds, Wallabies, (also got a soft spot for the Highlanders)
Favourite player (s): Berrick Barnes, Scott Higginbotham, the Faingaa brothers, Lachie Turner, and Josh Kronfeld is my all-time favourite… The list can go on, but I won’t bore you too much!
How long have you been a rugby fan?
Since I can remember!
What/who got you into rugby?
I’d have to say my family, and the fact that I grew up in a small town where everybody watches Rugby. I remember growing up, getting up in the early hours of the morning over weekends with my dad to watch a game played in NZ! Then there was a time when I kind of didn’t watch for a while, until my sister and her Kiwi husband came back from Australia/New Zealand. He took us to a Bulls/Highlanders game, and from then on, I was hooked again!
What’s your favourite part about rugby?
Definitely the atmosphere at the stadiums! And the way the fans support their teams, even though some can take it a bit too far. And I absolutely love schoolboy rugby, especially my little nephew’s Under 16 team! They play with so much passion… And then of course, when my team wins!
What’s your fondest memories involving rugby?
Most recently, it will have to be the trip I took down to Cape Town, to see the Reds! It was my first time ever at Newlands, and was amazing. The crowd there is just completely different from the one I’m used to at Loftus. And the boys really appreciated the fact that I went down to go see them…J I remember bumping into Saia and Anthony at the V&A Waterfront, and without realising, as I was talking, I was slipping Afrikaans words into the conversation somehow…
What do you feel is the biggest issue in the game right now?
Money… I’m not the biggest supporter of players going abroad (especially to France), because they’re getting paid a lot of money, and in Euro’s! Yeah, sure the experience is great, but I feel players must stay loyal to the team/country that helped them get to where they are today.
What is the biggest problem you encounter being a female rugby fan?
People thinking you’re a groupie/stalker! I’ve experienced that many times before… And also when guys we don’t know anything about the game, we’re only watching it because of the boys (which some girls do around here)! I admit, I don’t know all the rules off by heart, but I try to catch up where I can…
Any final words?
GO THE REDS!
